About Track Professor
The Beginning
In 1985, while undergraduate students, we began a project in our computer programming class to design a software program that would accurately and consistently pick winning horses at the track. We reasoned by applying certain trigonometric functions with calculus and Newtonian physics namely; velocity, constant acceleration, weight displacement, energy and work output, track variance, etc., we could mathematically formulate a working model of future races and accurately predict with the highest degree of certainty the outcome of races. A crude, but somewhat effective program was developed – enough to achieve an “A” on the project.
Over the next decade, we continued working with the program, making improvements on the original concept. In the 1990’s, we added a Post-Track Condition Adjustment Rating (PTCA), a rating which made adjustments in our speed indexes based on the post position of the horse and the track condition. By combining the PTCA rating with the Speed Index (SI), the Weight Displacement Index (WDI) and other vector calculations, we created the all important Power Index or PI. We named the revised program “Track Professor”. What makes Track Professor unique from any other handicapping system on the market is its ability to predict the future running pattern and finish position of each horse entered into a particular raced based on the horses own past performances, speed rating, potential energy and work output and its Power Index.
Track Professor basically lets the informed horse player know the fastest and best conditioned horse in a given race and analyzes the horse’s ability to compete at the distance. The one significant advantage Track Professor has over all other handicapping methods is that the final selections are based largely on hard facts and computer statistics and less on judgment.
Given there are no extenuating circumstances involving the the horse or jockey, the fastest and best conditioned horse will consistently and on a high percentage, win the race.
For over thirty years, Track Professor has gone through alterations and mathematical adjustments, all which have fine-tuned and improved the programs’ ability to accurately and consistently pick winning horses. With the introduction and installation of the PolyTrack racing surface on several tracks throughout the United States, Track Professor was revised to include a track bias taking into consideration this new running surface. In 2018 we incorporated into the program our “Strategic Performance Analysis (“SPA”) algorithm to better predict the winning outcome from each race.
Extensive actual use of Track Professor at tracks around the United States has shown it’s accuracy in picking the winning horse is about 68%. The 32% of horses that did not win the race for the most part, turned out to be part of the above mentioned “extenuating circumstances.”
